Newcastle United were beaten 1-0 by Sheffield Wednesday in their latest match.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal has told the Shields Gazette that he thought Newcastle United stopper Karl Darlow was ‘fantastic’ against his side.

Wednesday picked up a shock 1-0 win against Newcastle at St. James’ Park on Boxing Day, and Darlow was one of the few Magpies players to leave the pitch having played to the top of their ability.

The former Nottingham Forest stopper pulled off a series of brilliant saves during the contest to frustrate Wednesday.

And the 24-year-old’s performance even drew praise from Carvalhal after the match.

The Portuguese boss said: “The best player of Newcastle was the goalkeeper. He was fantastic.”

Despite Darlow’s brilliance, Newcastle still slipped to a defeat with a Glenn Loovens header proving the difference between the two sides.

Newcastle have lost three of their last six Championship matches, and they have fallen off the top of the table.

Brighton & Hove Albion now lead the way in the second tier of English football, with Rafael Benitez’s side’s next match coming against Nottingham Forest on 30th December.

Wednesday, meanwhile, have moved up to sixth place after their victory at St. James’ Park.
