His strategy appears to be working well for the Owls this season.
Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal has claimed that he will watch at least three matches from the Owls’ next opponents, the Sheffield Star reports.
Heading into the business end of the season, Wednesday are doing very well in the Championship, and currently sit inside the division’s top six. And Carvalhal has suggested that that is down to the preparation that his backroom staff do before each of their games.
“I like to see a minimum of three to four matches of our opponents,” he told the Star.
“I have my staff working on the analysis but I prefer to see the games before receiving that information.
“I try to understand the team, the coach, the substitutions and exactly how they play.
“After I receive the video report from my staff, we compare notes to see if we saw different things. After that, we show the players what we to want show them and prepare the strategy.”
The meticulous planning appears to be paying off for the Owls with nine games to go. Carvalhal has received plenty of credit for the way that he has utilised a rotation policy throughout the season that has seen a handful of changes occur before almost every game in an attempt to keep his squad fresh while others around them begin to tire.
But arguably for that strategy to work as effectively as it has done, Carvalhal has had to know which players are best suited to a certain type of opponent, and which would benefit from being rested for a game where they may have little impact, so by studying teams so closely, he has been able to make those decisions with the confidence to know that it will not harm their play-off aspirations.
