Wednesday were narrowly denied promotion in the Championship play-off final.
Carlos Carvalhal has assured Sheffield Wednesday supporters that they will do everything they can ahead of next season to ensure that they replicate, and perhaps better, the style of football that proved so successful for them this past campaign, the Sheffield Star reports.
The Owls surprised many by finishing in the Championship’s top six this past year, and ultimately knocked Brighton out on their way to the play-off final. However, they fell at the final hurdle as Hull beat them 1-0 at Wembley to secure the last Premier League spot.
But Carvalhal is confident that the agonising defeat will not thwart Wednesday’s hopes of going one better next season.
“We can’t promise that we go to the Premier League or play-offs because there will be 20 teams who will be fighting for promotion,” he told the Star.
“What I can promise is we will try to play the same football or better.
“The fans will enjoy the game and we will play good football.”
In many ways, the Portuguese’s task this summer will be a much simpler one than the one he faced last term. Though he must now carry the burden of expectation, potential targets will be able to look at what he has achieved at Hillsborough and realise that they are heading in the right direction, whereas last summer it presented more of a gamble to make the switch.
And with Carvalhal already well on his way to constructing a squad capable of playing the style that he wishes to see, he may have to do less business to help turn the side from play-off contenders to promotion favourites.
