The Irishman was a target for Carvalhal when he was at Celtic.

Sheffield Wednesday have snapped up a great looking signing on transfer deadline day with the arrival of Republic of Ireland international Aiden McGeady from Everton on loan until the end of the season.

The Irishman is desperate for first-team football before the end of the season as he looks to secure himself a place in the Republic of Ireland squad for the European Championships in the summer.

Now the Sheffield Wednesday boss has spoken about the signing and has admitted it is not the first time he has tried to sign him.

He is quoted by Eurosport as stating:

“He is a player that adds extra quality and a player I know very, very well because when he played at Celtic, I was coach of Sporting and I tried to bring him to the club, but it was not possible at that moment.”

Carvalhal was coach at Sporting Lisbon back in the 2009-10 season whilst McGeady was at Celtic – who he eventually left for Spartak Moscow in 2010.

Now he has his man at Hillsborough so hopefully McGeady can be a star at Sheffield Wednesday for the rest of the season.

McGeady has fallen foul of Roberto Martinez’s team selection recently and has played just one game for the club this season – in a 5-3 win against Barnsley in the Capital One Cup back in August.
