Lee Bullen has hinted there could still be a future for the popular midfielder at Sheffield Wednesday.

Lee Bullen has confirmed Jose Semedo might still be a Sheffield Wednesday player next season.

Semedo is one of six Owls players whose contracts are coming to an end this summer, along with Vincent Sasso, Claude Dielna, Daryl Lachman, Urby Emanuelson and Modou Sougou.

Wednesday released a statement on their official website more than a week ago confirming as much, but failed to clarify whether or not any of the above would be offered new deals.

That led to confusion among the Owls’ fanbase, while Sky Sports later reported the sextet had been let go.

But speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield on Thursday, Wednesday assistant Bullen implied that, for Semedo at least, there could still be a future at Hillsborough.

“I think there’s still a chance [of Semedo staying], absolutely,” the Scot said. “I think his contract has lapsed but there’s an opportunity… again, I don’t know if there’s anything actually on the table for Jose – I think that’s down to the chairman.

“But I think Jose’s the type of lad who is so phenomenally fit that he can do a job playing regularly. So again a decision may come down to Jose.

“If he’s offered a contract, does he want to stay and be that sort of squad player? He loves the football club, he absolutely loves the football club, so I don’t think it’d be a difficult decision to stay again. But he’s hungry, he wants to play regularly and if that’s the decision that he makes to go elsewhere then I think he’ll do the right thing for himself and his family, with regards to playing regularly.

“It might be the case that a guy like Jose Semedo might end up at the football club further down the line.”

Semedo signed for Wednesday six years ago from Charlton Athletic and helped the Owls to promotion in his first season in South Yorkshire, scooping both the club and League One PFA Fans’ player of the year awards.

The 32-year-old’s playing impact has waned since Carlos Carvalhal’s arrival as head coach in 2015, although he remains a popular member of the squad.
