The Sheffield United manager is said to be a long-term target for Sunderland.
Wilder was installed as one of the early favourites to succeed Chris Coleman at the Stadium of Light, but had drifted out to 5/1 by Tuesday, behind Mick McCarthy and Paul Cook.
But, as of Wednesday morning, the 50-year-old is back on top of the betting, with odds of 5/6.
Wilder was linked with the Sunderland position a year ago and is a former manager of Oxford United – the club supported, and previously invested in, by prospective Mackems owner Stewart Donald.
And despite an impressive two years in charge of his boyhood Blades, Wilder’s comments in the wake of Saturday’s home defeat by Preston North End, in which he suggested that ongoing boardroom disharmony could cause him to quit Bramall Lane, should encourage potential suitors.
The Sheffielder is sure to have Championship and perhaps even Premier League interest this summer, although the chance to manage a club of Sunderland’s stature, and potentially kick off a new era on Wearside – albeit in League One – could appeal to the third and fourth tier title winner.
McCarthy (9/4), Michael Appleton (7/1) and Cook (8/1) are the other leading candidates with Sky Bet.
