If Billy Sharp scores for Sheffield United against Charlton Athletic this weekend it will be the 200th goal of the striker’s career.

The 31-year-old has netted 47 of those since re-signing for the Blades in the summer of 2015, having originally come through the ranks at his boyhood club.

Early promise was realised during two years with Scunthorpe United between 2005 and 2007 when Sharp scored 56 times, form he later showed at Doncaster Rovers which convinced Southampton to take a punt on the forward in January, 2012.

Despite scoring nine Championship goals during the Saints’ run to promotion that season, he was deemed not good enough for the Premier League and spent the next three years trying to find a permanent home.

Yet with Sharp’s career supposedly in its latter stages the Yorkshireman has got a second wind at his beloved Bramall Lane. United’s march towards the League One title in 2016/17 has been greatly helped by his 26 league goals. No one has scored more in the EFL this term.

Sharp has netted almost a quarter of his career total in the last 20 months and is showing his best form since first breaking through as a talented 19-year-old.
