Sheffield United are in the market for a new goalkeeper, according to the Sheffield Star, as they prepare to let George Long leave on loan.

Manager Chris Wilder cannot give Long assurances over game time as the Blades prepare for life back in the Championship and will therefore allow him to leave temporarily in order to achieve that.

Simon Moore was Wilder’s first choice in 2016/17 as his team won the League One title, but needs to sign some competition. So here are three free agents from the second tier they could consider.

Mark Bunn

Starting with a familiar face, with Bunn having previously been on loan at Bramall Lane during the 2009/10 campaign back when he was a Blackburn Rovers player.

The 32-year-old is leaving Aston Villa this summer and while he has spent much of his career as second choice, does have experience at Championship and Premier League level.

Anders Lindegaard

Another who has played the majority of his career as second fiddle, this Denmark international can also count Manchester United and West Bromwich Albion as former employers.

Set to be released by Preston North End, the 33-year-old could work well alongside Moore rather than having the pressure of being a number one.

John Ruddy

The most experienced on the list and as result would probably command the highest wages, United signing Ruddy would represent a huge coup considering he has been linked with top flight clubs this summer.

After seven years and 242 appearances, the England international is leaving Norwich City and has more than enough quality to take up a spot between the post for Wilder’s men.
