After the success of Chelsea’s Jamal Blackman, Sheffield United are looking to sign more loanees from the Premier League.
Chris Wilder has admitted that Sheffield United are looking to bring in more loanees from the Premier League before the transfer window shuts at the end of August.
The Yorkshire club currently have one player on loan in the shape of Chelsea goalkeeper Jamal Blackman, who has played both of their Championship matches so far and generally impressed.
Jamal Blackman of Chelsea warms up before the match against the New York Red Bulls.
Now that the top flight season has also started, Wilder is keen to revisit the loan market with top tier teams having a better idea of who will feature in their plans and who can be sent out on temporary deals.
“We’ve identified a couple of younger players we think we might have an opportunity to get in. But sometimes they go away with the first team or sign a new contract. Then that can change all of the work you’ve done,” the Blades manager told the Sheffield Star.
“They take the lads away and chuck them in. Then, when it comes to the hurly burly of the Premier League, they want something different. That’s when we look to try and step things up.
“The standard is there and, if these lads have ambitions of playing in the Premier League, they are going to have to be able to perform in front of big crowds. That’s what they’ll get here. It’s a good education for them, both parties can benefit, and I think that’s recognised.
“You saw a few people do that last year, some really good loans, and it made a real difference to how they got on. We’re working hard behind the scenes and we’re looking to try and do something similar ourselves.”
Along with Blackman, Wilder also pointed to the success that Harry Chapman enjoyed at Bramall Lane last term while on loan from Middlesbrough, playing 14 games and scoring four goals in all competitions as United won the League One title.
It is expected that defence and midfield will be the areas the club look to strengthen with loanees this time around, having already been busy bringing in players this window.
Blackman is one of seven new arrivals, along with the permanent signings of Richard Stearman, Enda Stevens, George Baldock, John Lundstram, Nathan Thomas and Ched Evans.
