Premier League clubs and two home nations could be about to do battle for David Brooks, who continued his rise to prominence on Sunday.
Leon Clarke may well have grabbed the goals and the headlines for Sheffield United on Sunday, but David Brooks was the name on everyone’s lips after the Steel City derby.
He delivered an outstanding performance as the Blades won at Sheffield Wednesday, belying his tender years to be the best player on the pitch.
Starting in an attacking role alongside Clarke, Brooks showed no nerves on the big stage and instead ran the Owls ragged in an eye-catching display.
And United could reasonably worry that Premier League clubs will be among those watching, following summer reports in the Telegraph that Everton hold an interest.
Chris Wilder’s men are now well placed to aim for a promotion push this season and it now looks as though Brooks could be key, meaning he must stay at the club beyond January.
But Everton will not be the only interested party, with a tug of war certain between England and Wales at international level.
Brooks has been capped by both at youth level and, given his fine form, it would not be a surprise to see a promotion to the senior Wales squad, where he could pledge his allegiance to Chris Coleman’s side, just like fellow prospect Ben Woodburn.
