Sheffield United should consider making a move for Rochdale winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, as the Blades prepare for their return to the Championship.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing looks set to leave Spotland, with his current Rochdale deal due to expire in the summer, and Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder would be wise to take a potential move for the 25-year-old seriously.

If Mendez-Laing does sign for the Blades then it will be his second spell with the club. The Wolves academy product was enjoying a fruitful spell at Bramall Lane after signing on loan in January 2012 before injury ended his season prematurely. He returned back to Molineux after making 11 appearances for United.

Mendez-Laing was signed by Peterborough United after impressing in a loan spell but struggled for consistency at London Road and was snapped up by Rochdale in 2015 following his release by the Posh. In his two seasons with Rochdale, he has rediscovered his form and proved himself to be a key player for Keith Hill’s side.

This season has been his most productive yet after scoring eight times and weighing in with 12 assists. His versatility would be a big asset for any club, as he is capable of playing on either side of midfield, with his preferred position being on the left wing, but is also capable of playing as a lone striker.

It is likely that Mendez-Laing will not be short of potential suitors and securing his signing would represent a smart piece of business. Despite their promotion, United will be keen for Championship success without spending beyond their means.

A move for Mendez-Laing will not command a transfer fee and his wage demands will be well within their budget. The player will also be keen to prove that his ability warrants a place in the Championship and Bramall Lane seems be the perfect setting for the next stage of his career.
