Versatile Barnsley star Josh Scowen is one of Wednesday’s top summer targets – so just imagine the impact if Sheffied United land him instead.

United and Wednesday have been apart for too long. For the first time since 2011/12, Sheffield’s Steel City derby is on the Football League agenda with The Blades joining The Owls in the Championship after six seasons in League One.

Provided Wednesday don’t earn promotion to the Premier League that is.

But perhaps the rivalry should start a little earlier. According to The Sun, Sheffield Wednesday are plotting another raid on Yorkshire rivals Barnsley just a few months after snatching top scorer Sam Winnall.

This time, however, Josh Scowen is reportedly the object of their affections. Versatile, combative and proven in the Championship after making 35 starts for The Tykes this season, it’s easy to see why manager Carlos Carvalhal has reportedly identified the 24-year-old as a primary target.

Though United could make their mark early by challenging their play-off pushing rivals for Scowen’s signature. After all, it appears that right-back, where the natural midfielder has filled in at times this season, is a major cause for concern for Blades boss Chris Wilder.

As such, Wilder, a boyhood United fan, recently suggested to the South Yorkshire Times that the club may look to explore the possibility of another loan deal for Manchester United full-back Joe Riley. A dislocated shoulder meant he returned to Old Trafford just a few weeks after arriving in January.

However, United are screaming out for proven Championship talent and, in Scowen, they could find exactly that.
