Celtic could sign Sheffield United’s David Parkhouse for next-to-nothing next summer.

The young Sheffield United striker David Parkhouse has responded to talk about his future amid links to clubs including Celtic.

Parkhouse has impressed while on loan to Derry City in the League of Ireland Premier League, scoring 11 goals in 34 appearances.

But the 20-year-old will now return to Sheffield United, where he has eight months left on his contract.

Failure to extend his deal would allow non-English clubs like Celtic to snap up Parkhouse for next-to-nothing in compensation.

And speaking to 42.ie, the Northern Ireland Under-21 star has admitted there is a lot of talking to be done between now and the New Year.

“The goal is to make sure that I have the best chance of becoming a professional footballer and having a career in the game,” said Parkhouse. “But at the minute, to be honest, I don’t know what’s happening. I know what I want to happen, I know I want to be a footballer and wherever’s going to get me the best opportunity, that’s where I want to be.

“I don’t know where it’s going to be. I’ve been playing on loan, my focus has been on Derry and I just want to get the season finished. Between the end of this week and January, there’s a lot of talking to be done, a lot of negotiating. It’s going to take a few months to figure out what the best plan is – it’s not going to happen overnight.

“Ultimately, I want to be where I’m going to get games, number one, and where it’s going to [have an effect] like Deccie [Declan Devine, the Derry manager] had on me this year, whether it’s being back here or somewhere [else], I just want to be where gives me the best opportunity.”

Parkhouse is not the only Sheffield United player in whom Celtic have been credited with an interest in recent months.

Another one, George Baldock, recently signed a new long-term contract at Bramall Lane, however.

Sheffield United, Celtic or neither – where’s the best place for Parkhouse’s development?
