Sheffield United target Ricky Holmes has signed a new contract with Charlton so now they should rekindle their interest in Celtic’s Gary Mackay-Steven.

Sheffield United were dealt a blow in the transfer market when it was announced that top target Ricky Holmes had signed a new three-year contract with current club Charlton Athletic.

The Sheffield Star reported that the Blades had previously had two bids for Holmes rejected by the Addicks, but remained confident of pushing a deal through before the 30-year-old put pen to paper on a new deal at the Valley.

Now manager Chris Wilder needs to focus his attention in recruitment elsewhere and perhaps this should lead the United boss back to a former target in Celtic’s Gary Mackay-Steven.

The Sheffield Star claimed last month that the Yorkshire club had held informal discussions with the Bhoys after discovering that Mackay-Steven was available and it was believed that it would cost between £500,000 and £750,000 to sign the winger – who operates in similar positions to Holmes.

However, according to the BBC, Aberdeen have now made the 26-year-old their top target, but there is no sign of an imminent deal with the two Scottish clubs failing to agree on the forward’s valuation.

That could leave a window of opportunity for the Blades to rekindle their interest in Mackay-Steven and swoop in to sign the Scotland international – softening the blow of missing out on Holmes in the process.
