Celtic reportedly wanted Johnson in the summer of 2017.

Sheffield United have reportedly been given the chance to sign Middlesbrough loanee Marvin Johnson on a permanent basis in the January transfer window, but Celtic should look to reignite their interest in the fleet-footed winger.
The Sheffield Star claim Middlesbrough will not stand in Sheffield United’s way should Chris Wilder’s side look to land the 28-year-old on a permanent basis, as it seems he remains surplus to requirements at the Riverside.
The former Oxford United star has managed just seven Championship appearances for the Blades, coming off the bench in six of those outings including Saturday’s 1-0 loss to Leeds United.
It remains to be seen if Sheffield United will want Johnson on a permanent basis, with a figure yet to be reported. Johnson joined Boro in the summer of 2017 from Oxford for a fee of £2.5million (Sheffield Star).
Back in March 2017 before his move to Boro, the Scottish Sun reported that 30 clubs had taken a look at Johnson including Scottish champions Celtic and Brendan Rodgers should seriously consider reigniting that interest.
Celtic are lacking in options out wide. Daniel Arzani has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury, while Jonny Hayes and Lewis Morgan remain on the fringes of Rodgers’ squad. Scott Sinclair is out of form, while James Forrest shines.

A priority for Rodgers in January will be to bring a new winger to the club, and Johnson – who scored 11 goals and created 17 more at Motherwell in 68 appearances – would provide some much-needed cover.
His experience of Scottish football would make him an excellent addition, and enquiring to take him permanently next month may tempt Boro to cancel his Blades loan and send him north of the border.
With Rodgers reportedly interested in the winger beforehand, he should consider a move to bring him to Parkhead.
