Jagielka moved to Everton from Sheffield United 10 years ago.
Sheffield United’s faint hopes of bringing Phil Jagielka back to Bramall Lane any time soon look to be over, after the Everton captain extended his contract until 2019.
Jagielka’s prior deal was due to expire at the end of the coming campaign, prompting speculation that Everton could look to offload the 34-year-old they signed from Sheffield United a decade ago.

A return to Bramall Lane was strongly mooted, with odds on his transfer dropping to 1/3 at one stage with Sky Bet, although Jagielka later told Talksport that “as yet there’s nothing in (the speculation)”.
Jagielka’s reported wage of £50,000 a week (Sheffield Star) was always going to make a move to the Championship difficult, while a serious injury suffered by another Everton defender, Ramiro Funes Mori, has only increased the Toffees’ need to keep the 40-cap England international.
But the deal was still a (slim) possibility until Wednesday, when Everton’s announcement appeared to put paid to Sheffield United’s chances.
And Blades fans have been discussing the news on Twitter in the meantime.
