Sheffield United fans on Twitter are dreading the thought of signing soon-to-be-released Everton defender Ashley Williams this summer.

As reported by Sky Sports, centre-back Williams, who was on-loan at Championship side Stoke City during the recently concluded campaign, will leave Goodison Park when his contract expires at the end of this month.

The Sun (8/6; page 67) are reporting that newly-promoted Sheffield United are interested in the 34-year-old’s signature as they are weighing up their options.

Chris Wilder’s side play an expansive, forward-thinking and quick-paced style of football where two of the three centre-backs are designed to go forward.

Given the fact that Williams didn’t really stand out at Stoke in the Championship and his subsequent fall from grace at Everton, it would be very difficult to see where he would fit in at Bramall Lane.

As a free transfer, the Blades wouldn’t be losing much even if he were to struggle, but they are in the Premier League now and they cannot afford to take any passengers.

His time at Everton, and struggle to produce any strong performances before his loan spell, could perhaps be an indicator that Sheffield United shouldn’t make a move for him and the fans are seemingly in agreement.

Williams has a vast amount of experience from his days at Swansea City, Everton and not forgetting that he has been a fully fledged international for a long time.
