Sheffield United are no longer looking to sign an attacking midfielder due to the progress of Everton target David Brooks.

Sheffield United have called off their search for a new attacking midfielder because of the impressive progress of youngster David Brooks.

Brooks was due to be sent out on loan to Chesterfield this season, but manager Chris Wilder changed his mind and has since admitted that the 20-year-old could work his way into the starting XI in 2017/18.

That has now taken a further step forward, with Wilder’s assistant Alan Knill revealing that the Blades were no longer in the market for a player in the England Under-20 international’s position.

“It’s a great problem for us,” Knill told the Sheffield Star. “A great problem to have. We thought, for his education, it might have been good for him to go out and play. But now he’s looking to get in here with us. We think he’s going to be of benefit to us next season.

“I place David right in the squad. Last year he was probably just on the outside and hoping, towards the end of the season, to get a game. But we were chasing 100 points and wanted to keep faith with the players who had got us there.

“We told him to come back fit and strong, he’s come back fit and strong and had a great tournament with England. His confidence is really high. He doesn’t look out of place.”

Knill is referring to the Toulon Tournament, one which England won and Brooks was named best player. The United academy graduate has also scored four goals so far for the Yorkshire club in pre-season.

Everton have been repeatedly linked with the midfield ace, with the Daily Mail claiming both the Premier League club and RB Leipzig were keeping tabs on his progress.

Yet with Brooks happy at Bramall Lane and Wilder ready to give him his chance in the Championship next term, a move to the Toffees may have to wait for the time being.
