The Owls boyhood fan has come through the ranks at Hillsborough.
A number of Sheffield Wednesday fans have taken to Twitter to give their thoughts on the Owls Under-23s captain Alex Hunt signing a new contract at Hillsborough until the summer of 2021. as confirmed by the official website.
The 19-year-old midfielder has been with the Wednesday academy since the age of seven, signing his first professional contract with the Owls in February 2018, and made his first team debut in the Carabao Cup win over Sunderland at The Stadium of Light in August that year (BBC Sport).
Though that game remains his only senior appearance for Wednesday, the new deal is a good sign for Hunt as he seeks to break into the first team under new Owls manager Garry Monk, who joined the Hillsborough club earlier this month.
“I’m delighted, it’s my boyhood club,” he told the official Wednesday website. “My dad was buzzing, it was his birthday when I got offered the new contract. It’s a massive thing for me, my younger brother and my family who are all Wednesdayites.
“To sign my first professional contract was good but to get a new contract this early is a confidence boost for me to kick on. I came here at seven and signed my first professional deal when I was 17, it’s about getting near that first team now or going out on loan to develop my career.”
Although Hunt does have several players in front of him in the midfield pecking order, such as Massimo Luongo, Sam Hutchinson, Kieran Lee and Barry Bannan, the new deal is nonetheless a great vote of confidence for the youngster, and a number of Wednesday fans took the time to congratulate him on social media.
