The Owls duo have been impressive for the Hillsborough side this season but haven’t made Steve Clarke’s latest squad.
A number of Sheffield Wednesday fans have taken to Twitter to question the decision made by Scotland manager Steve Clarke not to include either Barry Bannan or Steven Fletcher in his squad for the upcoming Euro 2020 matches against Russia & San Marino.
Fletcher has been one of the standout performers for the Owls this season, hitting five goals in nine league starts, while the Wednesday captain has been crucial in bossing the midfield for Garry Monk and co this season – he was especially unplayable in the 4-1 hammering of Middlesbrough at the weekend.
However, neither have been called up by Clarke as the home nation prepares to visit Russia on 10 October and host San Marino three days later, with their chances of qualification through Group I having gone – though they can still make the finals via next year’s playoffs after winning their Nations League group last year.
Admittedly, Fletcher said he was considering his Scotland future a few weeks ago, though there were no further updates from him on the international front since his August interview with the Sheffield Star, while Bannan recently admitted he wants to keep playing for Scotland and has never ruled himself out (also Sheffield Star).
