Sheffield Wednesday manager Garry Monk has issued an update on Tom Lees, claiming that the upcoming Championship game this Friday is “probably too soon” for the Owls captain.

The 28-year-old defender has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring injury in the warm-up ahead of the Hillsborough fixture against Queens Park Rangers on 31 August.

Lees’ last appearance came in Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat against Preston North End on 24 August, with Dominic Iorfa having since formed a strong central defensive partnership with Julian Borner.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference for the game against Cardiff, Monk gave good news regarding Liam Palmer and Atdhe Nuhiu’s fitness before breaking the bad news about Lees.

“Palmer and Nuhiu are back, injury-free, minutes under their belt and out training today so that’s good news,” he told the SWFC media team, as shared on Twitter. “The game is probably too soon for Tom Lees, he needs a few more training sessions to get fully integrated but he’s a fit lad.”

Lees, valued at £3.2million by Transfermarkt, is a key member of the Wednesday team, having played the full 90 minutes in 42 of their 46 Championship fixtures last season, and also started each of the first five league matches this season before picking up his injury.

Wednesday are currently eighth in the Championship table, having won three of their last five league games prior to the international break.
