Alan Shearer has said on Match of the Day on BBC One that Liverpool central defender Virgil van Dijk was rightfully not sent off for a foul on Amadou Onana against Everton at Goodison Park in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Everton and Liverpool played out a goalless draw in the Merseyside derby.

After the match, Everton manager Frank Lampard said that Van Dijk should have been sent off for a foul on midfielder Onana, as quoted in The Guardian.

In the 76th minute of the Premier League game, the £240,000-a-week (SalarySport) Netherlands international central defender was booked for a foul on Everton midfielder Onana.

Van Dijk caught the Toffees star high on the shin.

The former Celtic star was shown a yellow card.

VAR did not intervene.

Television replays suggested that it was a dangerous challenge that probably could have resulted in a harsher punishment for Van Dijk.

Lampard certainly felt so.

Newcastle United legend Shearer believes that a yellow card for Van Dijk was the right punishment.

Shearer said: “It was a tough one. I think it was probably the right decision. I think it’s just a yellow card. I think it’s a tough one, but the referee got it right. Just.”
