Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have a good chance of keeping Harry Kane for the long term if they are able to win trophies.

Kane has performed to a remarkably high standard in recent seasons, with his hat-trick in the 5-2 victory over Southampton yesterday seeing him break Shearer’s record for the most goals scored in the Premier League during a calendar year.

With 37 league goals in 2017, Kane’s stock has continued to rise and Shearer feels that interest from the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid is inevitable, but also stressed that there is a possibility that the striker could elect to remain at Tottenham.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Shearer said: “I don’t think it’s inevitable. I think it’s inevitable they’ll come calling, because he’s that a good a player and he wouldn’t look out of place in either of those teams and he would score goals wherever he is playing.

“But I think a lot depends on if Tottenham win trophies, then it’s his club and that’s a big advantage for Tottenham. I know more than most what it means to play for your club.”

Kane, who has won the Premier League golden boot in each of the past two seasons, has certainly proven himself for Tottenham and the club will be eager to ensure that he doesn’t leave in the near future as his departure would be a major blow.

However, winning trophies, even with Kane in the side, will be very difficult for Tottenham given the quality of opposition they are up against in the Premier League and the Champions League, indicating that the club would have a major challenge in attempting to convince the England international to stay if there was interest from major sides.
