Newcastle United are likely to target a striker in January as they look to address a lack of goals.

BBC pundit Alan Shearer looks on before the FA Cup Second round match between Hartlepool United and Blyth Spartans at Victoria Park on December 5, 2014 in Hartlepool, England.

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has told Coral that Fernando Torres would be a good signing at St. James’ Park as the January transfer window approaches.

The Daily Mirror claims 33-year-old Torres is looking to return to the Premier League, after becoming disillusioned at Atletico Madrid where he has made just two starts all season in all competitions under Diego Simeone.

With Diego Costa joining the Spaniards in January, former Liverpool and Chelsea striker Torres has already made it clear to the Atletico hierarchy that he wants to leave the club on loan in the next transfer window.

Fernando Torres of Spain celebrates scoring his side's third goal during the UEFA EURO 2012 final match between Spain and Italy at the Olympic Stadium on July 1, 2012 in Kiev, Ukraine.

The report claims that has put Newcastle and Southampton on red alert, with the Toon in desperate need of a prolific striker after scoring just 10 Premier League goals in 11 outings.

Speaking to bookmakers Coral on their Facebook Live Channel, Shearer claimed Torres would do a “decent job” on Tyneside if manager Rafa Benitez can orchestrate a reunion between the two Spaniards.

“Yes, I think he would,” Shearer said, when asked if he thinks Torres would improve Newcastle. “I think that’s one of the areas where are Newcastle are struggling at this moment of time – scoring goals.

“We do need additions to give us something different, someone with a bit of presence who can sniff out a goal. If you’ve got a guy who can get you 10-15 league goals a season, that can make the difference.

“So yeah, I think he would be a good addition. If he is available, he’d do a decent job at Newcastle.”

Atletico’s number nine has just a matter of months remaining on his current contract, and will become available to talk to clubs under the bosman ruling from January 1.

During his time with Liverpool and Chelsea, Torres made 212 Premier League appearances and scored more than one goal every three games by finding the back of the net 85 times.

Although not the player he was that joined Chelsea for a huge £50million in 2011, the World Cup winner still managed to score 10 goals last season and he could be the next player to sign for the Toon.
