Alan Shearer thinks Tottenham Hotspur’s lack of transfer activity could ‘come back to bite them’ and compares it to Blackburn back in 1995.
Alan Shearer says that Tottenham Hotspur becoming the first Premier League side not to sign a single player since the introduction of the summer transfer window might come back to haunt them.
The closest Spurs came to bringing in a new face was a £25m bid for Jack Grealish, as reported by Sky Sports, but Aston Villa rejected the offer.
So the earlier than usual deadline day came and went without any additions to Mauricio Pochettino’s squad and Shearer thinks that could hinder the North Londoners.
The former striker compared it to Blackburn Rovers’ lack of business following their title victory, with him in the team, in 1994/95 and thinks that Tottenham could suffer the same fate this season.
“I think it might come back to bite them not buying anyone. Every single club, whether you’re Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City, they always go out and buy one or two players. You have to freshen up,” Shearer said while speaking as a pundit on Match Of The Day.
“I remember when we won the league with Blackburn in ’95 and then the next season we didn’t improve and that cost us.”
Blackburn did not come close to defending their crown the following campaign, eventually finishing seventh in the table before being relegated three years later.
Pochettino’s men will be looking to finish in the top four and secure Champions League qualification for the fourth successive season, but will face fierce competition from teams around them that have spent big over the summer.
