Alan Shearer has shared that Callum Wilson initially asked him whether he should ‘take’ Newcastle’s number nine shirt if it’s ‘offered’ to him by the club.
The Premier League’s all-time top-scorer jokingly told BBC Radio 5 Live (12/09/20 at 12:25 pm) that he told Wilson that he should ‘ask for it’ before he is ‘offered it’.
When Wilson signed for Newcastle a lot was made of who will wear the famous number nine shirt at St James’ Park – the current occupant, Joelinton or the new recruit?
After a conversation with Newcastle’s most famous ever number nine, it seems Wilson has stuck to wearing the number 13, as Shearer reluctantly shared what was said between the two.
“I don’t know whether I should say this or not,” Shearer told BBC Radio 5 Live. “He said to me ‘if it’s offered to me, do you think I should take it?’
“I said ‘you should ask for it before it’s offered’. I don’t know what happened but I read that Joelinton still wanted the number nine shirt and he was going to have the number 13 shirt.
“And if it ever came up then he would take it then.”

There is always a lot of pressure on the individual who wears Newcastle’s number nine, mainly because of what Shearer produced on a weekly basis for a number of years.
If Wilson can do a quarter of what the England legend produced then it’ll make the Toon Army faithful pretty happy, as he’s got off to a strong start.
Wilson scored on his Newcastle debut, alongside Jeff Hendrick, as Steve Bruce’s side secured a comfortable 2-0 win over West Ham on Saturday.
