Alan Shearer has suggested in The Sun that Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli should follow the example of Manchester City attacker Raheem Sterling.

The former Newcastle United striker was not impressed with the performance of Alli for Tottenham against City at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League at the weekend.

While the 21-year-old struggled to make an impact last Saturday evening, his England international teammate Sterling, who can operate as a winger or as an attacking midfielder, scored twice in the 4-1 win.

Former Liverpool star Sterling, 23, has taken his game to a whole new level this season and has established himself as an important player in Pep Guardiola’s team.

Former Newcastle striker Shearer, who now works as a pundit for BBC Sport, has suggested that Alli should look at Sterling and follow his example.

Shearer wrote about Alli in The Sun: “He could take a leaf out of Raheem Sterling’s book.

“Offered a swap, you would have taken Dele over Sterling this time last year. Sterling was getting headlines for things off the pitch and, on it, things were not happening for him.

“He has responded by knuckling down, listening to one of the best coaches in the game and the results have been fantastic for him and City.”
