Pundit Alan Shearer has told The Sun that he was impressed with Tottenham’s performance against Watford on Saturday afternoon – but thinks they still need another striker.
Spurs were in high spirits having enjoyed away wins over Burnley and Swansea City in the week leading up to Saturday’s home clash with the injury-ravaged Hornets.
In a blistering first half display, Dele Alli curled home a long-range strike to put Spurs in front, before Eric Dier and Son Heung-min added goals from outside the box to make it 3-0 by half time.
Son added his second and Tottenham’s fourth to seal an impressive three points for Spurs, who can now welcome star striker Harry Kane back from injury at a crucial stage of the season.
Tottenham were left frustrated later in the day though, as Chelsea’s 3-1 win at Bournemouth means that Spurs remain seven points adrift of the Premier League leaders, and they are running out of games to catch them.
Regardless, Mauricio Pochettino’s men have again enjoyed an impressive season, and look to be mentally stronger and far more resilient in the face of pressure than they were at the end of last season.
Now, pundit Alan Shearer has told The Sun that he was impressed with Tottenham’s display against Watford, stating that they were ‘excellent’ in every area of the pitch, scored superb goals and were quick in their play all over the park.
Tottenham’s Vincent Janssen looks dejected
Shearer added that Tottenham have the basis of a very good team, but must still buy another striker to support Kane in attack, claiming that they have ‘wasted money’ on striker Vincent Janssen, who has scored just five times in all competitions this season and squandered chancs against Watford.
“Against Watford, the whole team impressed me,” said Shearer. “I thought they were excellent in every department. Everything about their game was quick. They had an edge to their attacking and the goals they scored were superb. But for poor finishing, it could and should have been six or seven.”
“They have a solid and settled back line and there is a really good balance to their team. So it does all look very positive for Tottenham. They have got the basis of a very good team. I still think they need to buy someone to play with Kane or come in for him when he’s injured, because they have wasted money on Vincent Janssen,” he added.
