Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has slammed Liverpool saying they have “no chance” of winning the Premier League title if they continue to defend as they have been.

Shearer was speaking as a pundit on BBC One’s Match Of The Day programme following the Reds’ 1-1 draw with Burnley in the English top flight.

“They have no chance of winning the Premier League title if they carry on defending like this,” the 47-year-old said.

“There is no organisation and they can’t defend set pieces.”

Having lost 5-0 to Manchester City in the league the following week and then poor defending costing them again during a midweek Champions League draw with Sevilla, manager Jurgen Klopp would have been hoping for an improved performance at the back against the Clarets.

However, the visitors opened the scoring at Anfield when both Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan were drawn to Chris Wood and failed to beat the forward to the ball, leaving Scott Arfield with plenty of time and space to put it past Simon Mignolet.

A mix-up between Emre Can and Klavan to concede a corner in the second half further emphasised their issues in defence, while a header off the line from Matip and a good block from Mignolet were the only things that denied Ben Mee scoring for the away team as he was left unmarked twice from successive set pieces.

Only Everton and West Ham United have conceded more goals than the nine Klopp’s men have let past them in their opening five top tier outings.
