How important is it for Tottenham Hotspur to silence their trophy critics after Alan Shearer and David Ginola’s latest comments?
The debate of whether Tottenham Hotspur need to win a trophy or not to be considered a great team under manager Mauricio Pochettino continues to rumble on.
Pochettino undoubtedly finds the discussion tedious, but the longer Spurs go without silverware the more likely it is to be spoken about – with Alan Shearer becoming the latest to wade in.
“Another second place in the Premier League will be a notable achievement but they need a trophy,” Shearer wrote in his Sun column.
“They haven’t lifted one for ten years and now have possibly their best side in half a century.
“When you have that, you need to make the most of it.”
This comes after former Tottenham forward David Ginola spoke to talkSPORT about the prospect of Harry Kane leaving the club:
“Thinking about the future, is Harry Kane going to win trophies with Spurs?”
After being knocked out of the Champions League by Juventus on Wednesday (March 7) and Manchester City seemingly cruising to the Premier League title, the North Londoners are running out of opportunities to win a trophy this season.
Yet one prospect remains and one that perhaps Pochettino should concentrate plenty of energy on to finally end this talk – the FA Cup.
Spurs face Swansea City in the quarter-finals, but with Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City already out of the competition suddenly it seems like there’s a more realistic of winning.
