Newcastle United cruised past Preston North End in EFL Cup action last night.

Shay Given has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast that it would be a special year for Newcastle United if they were able to lift the EFL Cup.

Newcastle may be in the Championship, but they have made it into the quarter finals of the cup competition.

And Newcastle’s 6-0 win over Preston North End last night has led to suggestions that Rafael Benitez’s men may be contenders to win the competition.

Newcastle have momentum on their side, after winning their last six matches in a row, and Given suggests that seeing his former side at Wembley would be a momentous occasion.

“It would be a special year for them,” Given said when asked whether Newcastle could win the EFL Cup this season. “They would all prefer to be back in the Premier League, but it would be an unbelievable day out for them if they got to the final.”

Newcastle were backed by a large number of fans yesterday evening, when they strolled past Preston North End.

Magpies fans are desperate to see their side lift a major trophy, as they have not won significant silverware since 1955.

And Given said: “It’s unreal [support]. Last night I think there were over 50,000 people at a League Cup game on a Tuesday night. I don’t think you get there anywhere else in the country.

“I know how good they are and nothing has changed since I left the club. Hopefully they’ll get back to the Premier League next year.”

Newcastle will find out who they will play in the quarter finals of the League Cup later this evening, when the draw is made. The Magpies will be ball number five.
