Newcastle United sealed their promotion back to the Premier League last night.
Shay Given has joked to the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 25th April, that he would be willing to move back to Newcastle United this summer.
Given played for Newcastle for 12 years, between 1997-2009, and became a fans’ favourite at St. James’ Park.
And when asked whether he would be open to returning to Newcastle, Given joked that he is available on a free – as his current contract at Stoke City is expiring.
“I’m on a free transfer, they could get me for nothing,” he laughed.
In all likelihood there is no chance that Given will return to Newcastle this summer, due to the strength of Rafael Benitez’s current options in goal.
However, Newcastle are expected to make a number of additions in the summer transfer window.
And Given believes that the Magpies will need to spend a considerable amount of money to ensure that they aren’t relegated from the Premier League again.
“You probably would say £100 million, because of the prices for players,” Given added. “£25 million might only get you one player and they probably need six, seven or eight. It’s a big investment that Mike Ashley will have to do.”
Newcastle have already been linked with the likes of Ryan Shawcross, Jay Rodriguez and Tom Cairney, heading into the summer transfer window (Daily Mail).
