Shay Given can’t speak highly enough about Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers.
Newcastle United legend and self-proclaimed Celtic fan Shay Given has told The Scottish Sun that Brendan Rodgers has achieved something ‘phenomenal’ at Parkhead.
The wounded Scottish champions go into tonight’s visit of Partick Thistle on the back of a demoralising 4-0 defeat at Hearts on Sunday.
In doing so, the Jambos inflicted a first-ever defeat on the Celtic boss, who took the job in May 2016 and managed to go 69 games without losing in a domestic competition, picking up four trophies so far and few would be surprised if a back-to-back treble materialised.
It’s been a different story in the Champions League and Rodgers’s side have taken some severe beatings over the past two group-stage campaigns, but those results have come against Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.
Nevertheless, Given feels that the Northern Irishman’s achievements in Scotland compensate for a lack of progress in the Champions League and claims that his record North of the border will never be beaten.
“He’ll be disappointed with the defeats in the Champions League and the amount of goals conceded,” he told The Scottish Sun.
“But with the limited budget he has I think Brendan has done phenomenally well. What he’s done on the domestic front is incredible — I don’t think we’ll ever see the likes of it again.
“I’m a Celtic fan and the longer he’s at the club it will keep on improving.”
The Bhoys did extremely well to finish third in their Champions League group ahead of Anderlecht, and such an achievement will see them compete in the Europa League in February, where a last-32 tie with Zenit St Petersburg awaits.
