Shay Given delivers his verdict on Rafael Benitez’s reported January transfer budget at Newcastle

Rafael Benitez is known to want an injection of quality at Newcastle United in the January transfer window.

Shay Given has told Sky Sports, during their live coverage of Newcastle United’s match against Manchester City, that Rafael Benitez’s transfer budget in January is simply not enough.

Newcastle are believed to have £20 million to spend next month, with Benitez planning to make additions to improve the quality of his side.

But Given thinks that unless Benitez is handed more money to spend, then Newcastle’s problems could persist.

“There’s some talk that Ashley might give £20-£30 million in the January transfer window, but in today’s market what is that going to get you? You need more,” the former Magpies stopper said.

To have an increased budget, Benitez is likely to need a takeover to go through, as Ashley is simply not prepared to invest much money with his future at St. James’ Park so uncertain.

Newcastle are in desperate need of an injection of quality, as they are in the thick of a relegation battle.

The Magpies are sat just one point above the drop zone, and have won just once in their last 10 matches.

Newcastle were beaten 1-0 by Manchester City last night, as they lost at home for the fifth time in succession.

Newcastle have just one match remaining before the January transfer window re-opens, with Benitez’s men scheduled to play against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.
