The Cambridge United boss is ready to face off against Leeds in the FA Cup next month.
Leeds United will face League Two side Cambridge United in the third round of the FA Cup after the draw was made last night.
In doing so they will take on a former player in Shaun Derry. He spent nearly three years at Elland Road but will know his side face a real challenge if they are to get through to the fourth round.
Garry Monk manager of Leeds United
Leeds are currently flying in the Championship, sitting in fourth position, whilst they also made the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup.
Leeds fans are very hopeful that Garry Monk can lead the side to a long-awaited promotion from the Championship and Derry joins that chorus.
Shaun Derry at Leeds
He was speaking to BBC Radio Leeds yesterday after the draw was concluded and had this to say about Monk’s and Leeds’ promotion chances:
“I’m not surprised. I think you have got a really good manager up there.
“I don’t know Garry in person but I know a few of his coaching staff. If he is a representative of his coaching staff than I think you have got a really young, hungry and vibrant manager up there who, I’m hopeful, can take Leeds United back into the Premier League.”
Leeds United manager Garry Monk
Leeds are certainly having one of their best seasons in the second-tier since their relegation from the top-flight and the impact Monk has clearly had on the team cannot be underestimated.
He has stabilised the playing squad and not got involved with any of the off-field drama that typically surrounds Leeds United in the Massimo Cellino era.
The reward might end up being a place in Leeds folklore.
