Whilst there may have been room in the Nottingham Forest first-team for one of the club’s young stars in Ben Brereton recently, another of their young attackers had to head out on loan to get first-team football.
Gerry McDonagh was sent out on loan to Cambridge United on loan at the end of January to League Two side Cambridge United.
He joined up with the side after impressing on loan in non-league football with Wrexham.
After initially impressing he has recently found himself out of the team under Shaun Derry’s management and the Cambridge boss has been talking about his development this week.

Speaking to the Cambridge News this week the Cambridge boss had this to say about the Forest youngster:
“I can only pick 18 and I only travel with 18.
“It’s tough for Gerry and it’s tough for any person left out of the 11 or the 18. It’s a tough business and one of the most ruthless businesses in the world.
“That’s what it’s all about and Gerry knows he’s got to fight and scrap his way back into the group, and that goes for everybody.”
He must have done something right this week. McDonagh came off the bench against Newport County in League Two today as the U’s picked up a dramatic 3-2 win against the Welsh side.
The talented Irish striker may not be held in the same esteem as Brereton at Forest, but the club still hope he can be a star for the first-team at the City Ground.
He will need to keep pushing at Cambridge if that is the case.
