Shams Charania has suggested that Giannis Antetokounmpo’s trade future may hinge less on Milwaukee’s asking price and more on where he is willing to stay long term.
The Bucks can collect offers, but no serious contender wants to gut its roster for a short-term rental.
That is why Giannis’ preferred commitment list could shape the entire market before Milwaukee chooses a final package.
Giannis Antetokounmpo’s commitment question shapes the Bucks market
Speaking on Stugotz and Co., Charania explained why Miami, Minnesota, and Golden State can only push so far without knowing Antetokounmpo’s long-term thinking.
“At the end it was MIA, MIN, GS…. All those same teams you expect to be back in the mix, and I think that’s what the Bucks are going through.”
“The big question that’s going to come into play is which teams does Giannis want to give that long-term commitment to? If a team is going to give up 3/4/5 1st round draft picks, two/three high-level rotation players, swaps as well in a trade for Giannis, you better hope he’s going to be invested, motivated, and want to be there long term. Otherwise, it shrinks your window. Really, it depletes your ability to build a sustainable winner. So Milwaukee is trying to figure out which team he is willing to go to.”

That matters because the 31-year-old is still producing like an MVP candidate. Giannis averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists while shooting 62.4 percent last season.
But even that version of Giannis should not want an empty roster. Any buyer needs confidence in an extension before sending Milwaukee the kind of haul that could strip away its depth.
Heat, Wolves, and Warriors offer very different Giannis paths
Miami’s pitch is the cleanest emotionally, but the roster question is real.
A Heat package could involve Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., the No. 13 pick, future firsts, and swaps. If Bam Adebayo stays, Miami can sell Giannis on an elite defensive frontcourt, but depth and shooting would need rebuilding fast.
Minnesota can offer a win-now partner in Anthony Edwards, but a deal built around Julius Randle, Jaden McDaniels, Donte DiVincenzo, picks, and swaps could leave the Wolves thin and cramped around Giannis and Rudy Gobert.
Golden State’s offer is built around Stephen Curry’s timeline. Jonathan Kuminga, Brandin Podziemski, Moses Moody, salary, and multiple firsts could interest Milwaukee, but Giannis would have to believe Curry and Draymond Green still give him a real title window.
That is the decision Shams pointed to. Milwaukee can negotiate with everyone, but only Giannis can tell teams whether the cost buys a future or just a gamble.
