Shamrock have confirmed that Duff will join Celtic as a coach.
Shamrock Rovers have confirmed Damien Duff is to join Celtic on their official website in the coming days, after his spell with the Irish side finally ended.
Duff, 39, who enjoyed huge success as a player with the likes of Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle United, Chelsea and Fulham in the Premier League – as well as 100 caps with Ireland – went into coaching after retiring in 2015.
The two-time Premier League winner finished his playing career at Shamrock and immediately became the club’s Under-15 manager. He instantly impressed, and was added to the club’s first-team coaching staff.
Celtic have caught wind and links between the Scottish champions and Duff began about two months ago. Now, Shamrock have confirmed on their official website that Duff is joining Celtic – by posting a long, heartfelt message to Duff.
They finish the message with: “Celtic are not just getting an Irish legend, they are getting a young coach of exceptional potential with an unbelievable work ethic and brilliant football mind. But most of all, they are getting a guy of great integrity.
“Damien, thank you, everyone involved at Shamrock Rovers F.C. wishes you well.”
It remains to be seen what position Duff will take on at Celtic, as he joins a coaching set-up with plenty of other ex-professional players. The likes of Kolo Toure, Stevie Woods and Chris McCart all enjoyed successful careers.
Duff is likely to have crossed paths with Brendan Rodgers, with the winger joining Chelsea in 2003 for three years – while Rodgers became part of the youth coaching set-up in 2004 until 2008.
