Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to react after the club announced that Kell Watts had joined Wigan on loan for the 2021/22 campaign.

What’s the story?

Well, it’s evident that the Newcastle fans are furious about this.

The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at Plymouth Argyle, where he made 50 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals.

After such an impressive stint away from Tyneside, it feels as if some supporters were hoping to see Watts feature under Steve Bruce this season.

However, the centre-back will now spend more time in League One after Bruce decided he had no use for him at St James’ Park this season.

Watts has already made his Premier League debut for the Magpies, featuring against Liverpool on the final day of the 2019/20 campaign.

He could make his Wigan debut tonight against Hull in the Carabao Cup, or failing that, against Rotherham on Saturday.

Strange loan for Kell Watts

After proving himself in League One last season, what’s the point in sending Watts straight back to England’s third tier?

His heroics for Plymouth Argyle proved that he’s capable of playing at League One level, so Newcastle should’ve tested their academy graduate by finding him a loan in the Championship.

A few fans below shared that same thought.

Of course, the experience will benefit Watts, but it’s nothing he isn’t already used to at that level.

In our view, this is a poor decision from Newcastle.
