Shaka Hislop has admitted to ESPN that he has been left surprised by West Ham United’s disappointing start to the Premier League season.

West Ham lie 18th in the Premier League table after winning one of their seven league outings this season.

Slaven Bilic’s side drew 1-1 with Middlesbrough – who were in the Championship last term – at the Olympic Stadum on Saturday to end a four-match losing streak.

These are very testing times for a team who were superb last season and were battling for a Champions League qualification spot in the business end of the campaign.

Whether it’s a common case of second-season-itis for the Londoners, or their relocation from Upton Park, there is obviously something not right for United.

And Hislop, who spent a total of five years at West Ham across two spells, admits that their dismal start to the season, encompassing four points from a possible 21, has left him surprised.

“After a good season last season and a hectic transfer window, and a move across town for West Ham United, I wanted to see how they’d start the season, and I have to say it has surprised me,” he told ESPN.

Fortunately for the Irons, they have a two-week international break which gives Bilic ample time to mastermind two wins in their next two games – away to Crystal Palace and home to Sunderland.
