Shaka Hislop has chosen West Ham United’s reported pursuit of Javier Hernandez as a ‘hit’ when gauging transfer rumours as hit or miss on ESPN.
Plenty of big-name strikers have been linked with moves to West Ham – including Olivier Giroud and Kelechi Iheanacho – but the speculation surrounding the Bayer Leverkusen hitman seems to be generating most buzz within the fanbase.
But he won’t be cheap.
Bild reported earlier this month that the Irons could sign him for just £13 million, but a report from Bleacher Report this week indicates that the 29-year-old is looking for a salary of around £140,000 per week.
Nevertheless, Hislop, who spent five years at the London club across two different spells, believes that his former side will ultimately get their man this summer.
Asked by ESPN why it’s a ‘hit’ for him, Hislop said: “I’ll tell you why I like this. Chicharito is the kind of player that West Ham need: he’s mobile, gets in the box and finds the net.
“You need to build a team around him. He gives you goals, but not a whole lot else, which I have no problem with. I’m taking that [Hernandez transfer].”
Tottenham Hotspur have also been linked with the Mexico international, who previously impressed during spells with Manchester United and Real Madrid.
Spurs’ reported interest spells bad news for West Ham, given that Mauricio Pochettino’s boast Champions League football, but they would not be willing to pay £140k-a-week, so perhaps there is hope for the Irons in that regard.
