Newcastle United are linked with the Liverpool star.

Shaka Hislop has told ESPN that he believes Newcastle United will sign Liverpool hitman Danny Ings.

The Guardian reported earlier this month that Newcastle and West Ham United would be among those vying to sign the 25-year-old striker.

Ings has only managed two Premier League appearances under Jurgen Klopp since returning from a lengthy layoff this season and he seems surplus to requirements at Anfield.

The Magpies have only scored 19 goals in 20 Premier League games this season and Rafael Benitez’s side – who sit one point above the relegation zone – need a tried-and-tested goalscorer in January to guide United to safety come May.

And former Newcastle goalkeeper Hislop is confident that a deal to sign the ex-Burnley star will materialise.

He told ESPN: “Newcastle’s big problem this season is scoring goals. Surplus to requirements at Liverpool and we need goals up on Tyneside. I think that’s a hit.”

Ings is comfortably a better goalscorer than Dwight Gayle and Joselu and fitness permitting he will prove as much if he winds up at St James’s Park.

He managed 11 Premier League goals during the 2014-15 campaign with Burnley – Gayle has 18 in his entire career in the top flight, while Joselu has seven in 40 Premier League games – and Newcastle fans should hope it materialises.
