Sevilla have confirmed the signing of Tottenham-linked star Jesus Manuel Corona from Porto in a bargain transfer deal.
Spurs were linked with Corona during the summer transfer window [Transfer Window Podcast], while Arsenal were also said to be keen on the Mexico international [Daily Mail].
Corona had a release clause of £21m, but with Porto looking to sell after the player turned down a contract extension, by August, it was said that he was available for around £10m.
Sevilla snap up Tottenham-linked Mexico international
The right-back or right winger ultimately stayed put in the summer but Sevilla had been leading the race for some time and now they’ve finally landed their man for a relatively minor fee.
The Andalusian club announced the signing of ‘Tecatito’ on a three-and-a-half-year deal on Friday morning and Fabrizio Romano has reported that the final fee was around €3m (£2.5m).
Missed opportunity for Spurs?
This is outstanding business from Sevilla and perhaps a big opportunity missed for Tottenham.
Spurs forked out over £25m to bring in Emerson Royal from Barcelona in the summer, and the Brazilian hasn’t yet found his feet in the Premier League.
It took a little longer for Sevilla to land their man, but they’ve paid a much lower fee for a much more experienced player who notched an impressive 69 assists during his time at Porto.
He also has experience of winning silverware, having tasted success with Porto, Monterrey and Mexico.
At 29, he probably doesn’t have long left at his peak, but if he thrives at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan over the second half of the season, Spurs fans may wish their club had pushed a little harder to bring him to London.
