Liverpool looked to be cruising through to the knockout stages of the Champions League this evening, leading 3-0 at half-time against La Liga side Sevilla in Spain. A brace from Roberto Firmino and one from Sadio Mane saw Liverpool 3-0 up at half-time.

But somehow they through it all away. Jurgen Klopp’s men capitulated in the final half-hour of the game. Wissam Ben Yedder pulled one back before converting a penalty, before Guido Pizarro’s 90th minute strike earned the Spanish side a draw.

It was a shocking way to throw away all free points and a result which again highlighted the English side’s obvious defensive frailty.

It was also a result which saw Ben Yedder, a main protagonist in the comeback, troll the Reds on Twitter. The Frenchman, sent out this tweet after the game:

No doubt this was in reference to Liverpool’s famous night in Istanbul. Trailing 3-0 to AC Milan at half-time in the 2005 UEFA Champions League final Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool fought back to win a now infamous final

Milan fans will undoubtedly have enjoyed this result, although they already got their revenge on Liverpool in the 2007 final which they won 2-1.

As for Liverpool’s knockout stage hopes, they must ensure they avoid defeat against Spartak Moscow in their final group game at Anfield to make qualification a certainty.
