Benteke has struggled since his move from Aston Villa.
Christian Benteke scores the first goal for Liverpool
It’s safe to say that it hasn’t been the easiest of times for Christian Benteke at Liverpool. Signed for £32.5 million last summer from Aston Villa – and becoming the Reds’ second most expensive player in the process – a lot was expected of the Belgian to provide that cutting edge.
But there have only been 10 goals in all competition, averaging a goal in just over every four appearances, while a change of manager has not had the best effect on him as he has fallen down the pecking order since Jurgen Klopp replaced Brendan Rodgers.
There have been moments where he has shown he does have some quality – his bicycle kick against Manchester United and his display off the bench against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. There have been a few games where he has made an impact as a substitute.
But there have been occasions when he hasn’t taken advantage of opportunities – the Exeter FA Cup games should’ve seen him have a big impact but didn’t – and several one-on-one misses got many fans on his back. If he put them in the back of the net, perhaps there would be a bit more leeway and more of a role for him at the club.
It’s unclear as to whether he will be at Liverpool at the start of next season, a lot could depend on the players that Klopp wants to bring in, but he’d have a huge job on his hands to turn things around if he has a future at the club.
