Newcastle United are reportedly keen on Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph, but perhaps Watford’s Etienne Capoue would be a better target.

A report from the Guardian in April suggested that Newcastle were considering targeting Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph this summer following their promotion back to the Premier League. But with the England international suffering a season-ending injury (via Manchester Evening News), Rafa Benitez would surely be wise to rethink pursuing a deal.

Of course, Delph is a tremendous talent but his struggles with fitness surely make a deal particularly risky for the Magpies especially as City may not be particularly keen to sell him, and thus, they may demand a significant fee.

For that reason, Newcastle may be wise to instead consider targeting Watford midfielder Etienne Capoue, who has enjoyed a brilliant year in the Premier League.

The 28-year-old has scored seven times in the top flight to only sit behind Troy Deeney in the club’s scoring charts with his most recent goal coming in the dramatic defeat to champions Chelsea earlier this week.

While the Hornets are on course for a third consecutive year at the highest level, the Frenchman would surely be forgiven for thinking that joining newly-promoted Newcastle is a step in the right direction for his career if the chance arose over the coming months.

And while his arrival may not capture the imagination in the same way that Delph’s arrival probably would, there is no question that only one of the pair will look on this campaign with any fondness, and thus, would probably be the better acquisition as Benitez looks to re-establish the team in the Premier League.
