Leeds United, Sheffield Wednesday and Rangers are all reportedly interested in former Derby County midfielder John Eustace.

Former Derby County and Leeds United midfielder Seth Johnson has told The Scottish Sun that he understands why Rangers want to sign John Eustace this summer.

The 35-year-old midfielder is a free agent after being released by Championship club Derby earlier this month.

According to BBC Sport, Scottish Championship outfit Rangers are interested in securing the services of Eustace and have already held talks with him.

The former Stoke City and Watford midfielder was injured for most of the recently concluded 2014-15 season, and was able to make just 13 appearances in the Championship.

In those 13 league games, Eustace scored one goal, created three chances, had a pass accuracy of 84% and a shot accuracy of 20%, and won 16 headers, one dribble and 31 tackles.

It could come as a surprise to many that Rangers, who will be aiming for automatic promotion to the Scottish Premiership next season, want to sign the 35-year-old, but Johnson can understand why.

“He’s older than me, ain’t he?” the 36-year-old told The Scottish Sun. “I don’t know John personally, but he didn’t play many games for Derby last season.

“But if the manager is looking to bring experience it might be good to have him around the place. Someone to look after the younger boys.

“John’s played a long time at a decent level and if he can get fit it might be an okay signing. I’m sure he’d be great to have around, a good pro who can get the players going.”

Would John Eustace be a good signing for Rangers?

One should not expect Eustace to work miracles at Ibrox – but if he is full fit, then he could prove to be a good signing.

The level of the Scottish Championship is not as good as that of the English Championship, which will be a bit easier for the former Derby man.

Eustace will be able to provide a calming influence in the dressing room, and will be someone that young players can look up to when things get tough.

The fact that English Championship clubs Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday are also interested in the veteran midfielder shows that he is still highly thought of.

According to The Daily Record, both Leeds and Wednesday have been chasing Eustace since his departure from Derby.
