Ryan Sessegnon has named Eric Dier as one of the toughest Tottenham Hotspur players in training.

Dier has struggled to impress both Mauricio Pochettino and his successor Jose Mourinho at Spurs this season.

In total, the England international has been named on the bench 22 times across all competitions.

In November, during one of the early Mourinho games, the Portuguese started him and subbed him off after only 29 minutes for tactical reasons.

On the pitch there’s question marks about Dier, but it looks like it’s a different story at Hotspur Way.

Speaking to a Tottenham Q & A on the club’s official Twitter account, Sessegnon was asked who the toughest players are in training.

The former Fulham gem said: “I would probably say Eric Dier is a tough opponent to play against in training purely because when he plays at centre-back he is quick, he is strong, covers a lot of ground, is hard to get past sometimes.”

Despite an ominous start to life under Mourinho, Football London reported last month that the head coach could use him as a centre-back a lot more regularly next season rather than sign a replacement for out-of-contract Jan Vertonghen.

That wouldn’t go down that well with fans of the Lilywhites, but these are testing times for Tottenham – who took out a £175 million loan earlier this week – and it remains to be seen how much money will be made available on transfers during the window.
