Martin Keown has said on talkSPORT (12:21pm, March 3, 2023) that he is not surprised that Roberto Firmino has reportedly told Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp that he plans to leave at the end of the season.

The Arsenal legend has noted that Liverpool have a number of options in attack now.

The talkSPORT pundit thinks that Firmino now believes that his job at Liverpool is done now.

According to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg on Twitter, the Brazil international forward has personally told Klopp today that he is leaving Liverpool in the summer of 2023.

Firmino is out of contract at the Merseyside club at the end of the season.

Martin Keown on Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino exit rumour

Keown said: “I don’t mean that is such a surprise, Jim, is it when you think the number of strikers they have just bought at the club?

“Diaz is injured at the moment, Gakpo is there, Nunez, Jota as well returning from injury. So, maybe he feels his time is served at Liverpool. He has been a great servant to the club.”

Inevitable

In our view, it was almost inevitable that Roberto Firmino was going to leave Liverpool at the end of the season.

The 31-year-old forward has been on the books of the Reds since 2015 and spent his best years at Anfield.

Firmino is past his prime now, and having won the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League with Liverpool, he has done his job at the Merseyside club.

As Keown notes, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has options in attack now.

Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez are the main attacking players for Liverpool at the moment.

It will be interesting to see which club Firmino now goes to.
