Paul Merson has stated that Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips ‘seriously can’t be’ on ‘£25k-a-week wages’ after that claim was presented to him by Jeff Stelling.
The Sky Sports presenter was comparing the Leeds midfielder’s rumoured wages to that of his England teammates and how he might be thinking of ‘doubling’ or ‘trebling’ that to get on their level, as he told Soccer Saturday (02/04/22 at 2:25 pm).
During the past 18 months, Phillips has become one of the best midfielders in the country and an important player for his country.
That was displayed at Euro 2020, when the Leeds academy product, alongside Declan Rice, bossed the middle of the park for the Three Lions.
Given that Phillips would probably put himself in the top bracket of England players, both Stelling and Merson discussed what his club are paying him as a result of that.
“Leeds have got some big decisions to make on the likes of Kalvin Phillips, who says he wants to stay,” said Stelling.
“But I was reading this week that he is on £25k-a-week, which in comparison to all those teammates who gather for England and such like.
“I don’t know whether England teammates talk about their wages or not. If he is, then he might be thinking he might want to be doubling his or trebling his wages.”
Merson responded: “He needs to ring me. I could be his agent and I could do a better job. Seriously, he can’t be on that.”
There are a lot of rumours flying about regarding Phillips and whether he will be heading for the Elland Road exit door in the summer.
But the Leeds faithful will be glad to hear that the Yorkshire side are confident of keeping their star man and he could pen down a new deal, as reported by 90min.
Regarding transfer speculation about Phillips, it should all be seen as a compliment because it proves that the Whites have a top, top quality player on their hands.
If it wasn’t for his recent injury, then he would have been part of England’s latest international matches and he should be on that plane to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
